Healing Postpartum Hair Loss

Long bob curled with a L'ange Applatir

Those curls? Yeah, I wasn’t sure I would ever have good hair again. I didn’t really have any issues after the birth of my first daughter, Addilyn back in 2018. My second pregnancy, changed a lot of things! First of all, I had Gestational Diabetes, which was a unique experience, for sure. Then I got Postpartum Depression (more on that someday soon). COVID hit with a fury just weeks after she was born. And around 3 months postpartum, all of my hair fell out. The postpartum hair loss was not something I was prepared for, and it hit me hard.

I have always had naturally thick hair, so this was very unsettling for me. Literal handfuls would come out every time I touched my head. Washing it was even worse. I had a receding hair line and bald spots that made me super self conscious. I would cry any time I even gave a little attempt to fix it, and resigned to just looking a mess most of the time. Any of this sound familiar, mama?

Postpartum Hair Loss

You can really see it in the pictures from our beach vacation, about 4 months postpartum. I’m not sure if it was just hormones going crazy, the stress of PPD and COVID combined, lack of good nutrition or just one of those things that we get to deal with to have our sweet babies, but it was so bad this time.

Postpartum Hair Loss

One day a few months back, I just got so fed up with feeling self-conscious all of the time and decided that it was time to try and fix things, for my own sanity. I wanted to feel good about myself again. Read on to see what I did, what helped and just maybe some encouragement, too!

Hello Bello Hair, Skin + Nails Vitamins for postpartum hair loss

I started with good vitamins. Healing something like this really does start on the inside. I chose Hello Bello Hair, Skin + Nails gummies because I really love the company’s commitment to better ingredients. The price is fantastic, and you can even bundle and save by auto-shipping vitamins to your door! I went ahead and used this as an excuse to get the whole family on some! This was a true game-changer for healing my postpartum hair loss.

I decided it was time to throw away the hair brush that I had had since high school. Literally like 15 years, you guys. I’ve been an adult for a while. Why I haven’t bought a new brush? I couldn’t tell you. After hearing so many rave reviews, I made the change to a Wet Brush and  I am obsessed! Somehow, it magically detangles without nearly as much pulling. Which for me meant that more of my hair got to stay on my head! I went ahead and grabbed my daughter this cute little Disney Wet Brush, too! She loves to be like mommy, and it makes hair brushing time way easier.

Wet Brush Hair Detangler

Then, I went absolutely crazy and decided to chop it off at home! I had been dying to get to the hair dresser, but with COVID, a toddler and a nursing infant, I just could never find the time. My length was so fried and frizzy, and straightening it took way more time than I had. I wore it in a not-so-cute messy bun 99% of the time and I was so over it.

So one night, I put it in a low ponytail (leaving the front sections out), had my husband cut the length off and used a razor comb to shape the layers. I instantly felt 10lbs lighter! I can get it cute in about 5 minutes (Thanks to the L’ange Applatir!), which is a major win! I also truly think that cutting all of the dead, dried out hair off really helped improve the overall health of my hair! I noticed pretty quickly that it started to fill back in a bit and regained some shine. Here is the comb I use, and I absolutely love it! I still use it to maintain the shape and it works fantastically.

Conair Pro Jilbere De Paris Precision Cut Comb

You can still see some of my new growth flyaways in this picture, but my hair looks so much healthier, and you can see it in my smile, too!

Long bob

Once I got my cut out of the way, I started working from the scalp out! This scalp purifying scrub helped to clear out any buildup and get my skin healthy.

Purifying Scalp Scrub

At the same time, I started using this Detox Scalp Serum and Thinning Therapy Serum, and noticed a dramatic improvement in the new growth and overall texture of my hair. ( Use this link and code LOVEYOU right now to save 50% on hair care products!)

Hair Thinning Therapy Serum for postpartum hair loss

You can really see how well the new growth has come in in the pictures from Addilyn’s 3rd Birthday back in March!

long bob haircut

With my hair this short, I only wash it a couple of times a week. This Blowout Shampoo and Conditioner have made a huge difference in the amount of time it takes me to style, which is a big fat mom win if you ask me!

L'ange Blowout Shampoo

I’ve also gotten hooked on the Glass Hair Thermal Blowout Primer! A little goes a long way, and my frizzy, wavy hair is almost entirely straight when I finish blow drying now!

Thermal Blowout Primer

I know I hinted earlier, but the L’ange Applatir Flat Iron is my bestie. I use it to straighten and to curl. As a wavy, thick haired girl, I have been around the block a time or two when it comes to flat irons. This guy has held up beautifully and is right on par with any crazy expensive ones I have owned in the past. I do plan to upgrade to that Le Duo at some point, just because I hear so many rave reviews!

L'ange Aplatir Flat Iron

Now that we have chatted the practical fixes, can I speak into your heart for a second? The 4th trimester is hard on a mama, ya’ll. You get so caught up in caring for your baby and adjusting to all of the changes in your body (stretch marks, saggy boobs, weight changes, hair loss, acne….) that it can be so easy to get down on yourself. To doubt your beauty and value and worth. I know for me, especially this second time around, it was really hard emotionally. If you are searching for this topic, my guess is that you can relate.

I wanted to share a few verses that really speak into those insecurities, and I hope that they are a sweet reminder to you this morning of your beauty and worth.

Song of Solomon 4:7

You are beautiful. There is no flaw in you. You are perfect the way you are. It’s just hair. It will grow back. It has zero bearing on your worth, even if you feel like it does!

You are precious. Seen. Loved. Even when you feel left out, lonely and less than.

1 Samuel 16:7

Your heart matters far more than your hair.

I hope that just maybe this has helped you out! If you are feeling down, just know that better days are coming. Take care of yourself, mama. It is so worth it! Postpartum hair loss is tricky, but most of the time it is only a temporary struggle. You’ve got this!

Easy Bakery-Style Peanut Butter Buttercream

Bakery Style Peanut Butter Buttercream

Honestly, is there any better flavor combination than peanut butter and chocolate? I created this rich, smooth, creamy peanut butter buttercream to make a Reese’s cake for my husband a few years back, and it has become one of my most asked for icing flavors. It makes the literal perfect coating to a moist chocolate cake, or mix it up and do a peanut butter and jelly flavor! The recipe comes together in minutes and makes you look like a pro baker, even if you aren’t!

The first thing you will do is add your softened butter (I use half salted, half unsalted) and peanut butter to your Stand mixer, fitted with a whisk attachment.

Butter and peanut butter in a mixer bowl

Turn the mixer on, medium-high, and whip it until creamy and fully incorporated. Add the salt and vanilla and mix those in, too!

Cream butter and peanut butter together
Alternate adding a cup of powdered sugar and a tbsp of whipping cream at a time, mixer on medium-low, and scraping the sides as needed. Start with the powdered sugar and end with cream. Once you have added all of your ingredients, scrape the sides of your bowl. Turn the mixer on high and whip it until light and fluffy!
Powdered sugar, added to peanut butter and butter mixture
Peanut butter buttercream icing

If that doesn’t look like a little kiss from heaven, right in your mixing bowl, I don’t know what does! Now go ahead and fight the urge to sit there and eat it straight with a spoon.

It glides right onto a cake for the smoothest of finishes. You could also pipe it onto cupcakes or brownies, too! So. Good!

I personally like to add Reese’s cups and Reese’s Pieces with mine. And that milk chocolate ganache, too!

Bakery Style Peanut Butter Icing

This particular cake was for a sweet friend of mine. It’s definitely a favorite in our house though! If you try the recipe, please leave a rating to help others find it!

Equipment

  • Stand Mixer with whisk attachment

  • 1 cup peanut butter Go for quality! I prefer JIF or Reese's brand.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

  • 4 tbsp heavy whipping cream

  • Whip on medium-high until light and creamy, pausing to scrape the sides.
  • Add the vanilla and salt, and mix until incorporated.

  • Once you have added all of your ingredients, scrape the sides of your bowl. Turn the mixer on high and whip it until light and fluffy!

Hysterectomy sugar cookies

I’ve been meaning to blog these for months, but…life. One of my very sweet friends had been having a rough time, and finally decided to have a hysterectomy. Her personality is just the best, you guys, and she wanted to celebrate big! She asked me if I could make her some funny hysterectomy cookies to share with her loved ones and her care team, and of course I could not resist!

These are, as usual, my favorite no-spread sugar cookies and my viral royal icing recipe (Literally re-pinned thousands of times!)!

Mothly Subscription Canceled Cookie

We found a few really funny “hysterectomy phrases” to bid goodbye to her Uterus.

Bye Felicia Hysterectomy Sugar cookie

How stinkin’ cute are the little angry uteri?! (It is Uteri, right? Uteruses?) I admit, I was a little intimidated by the idea of them, but when it came time to execute the design, they really were not that hard at all!

I've got 99 problems but a uterus ain't one

The staff absolutely loved these little guys, and it was so fun to help her celebrate this major life event. The teal background with the gold and floral added a little glam to the set, too!

No More Cramping My Style Hysterectomy Sugar Cookie

No more cramps, no more pain!

See you Later Ovulator Sugar Cookie

If you, or someone you love, is having a hysterectomy, you should totally make or order these! It’s a big deal for us ladies, and it doesn’t hurt to have a little fun with it! I know that they really brightened my friend’s day and would be such a cute recovery gift.

If you’re loving these as much as we did, I would so appreciate if you would Pin them, and maybe give me a little follow!

Those Who Sow in Tears

April 21, 2021      Leave a Comment

It’s national infertility awareness week and being in ministry working with women going through this season, I feel like I can’t not make a post. I could jump on here and quote statistics all day long, but surely you are seeing enough of those in your feed already. So instead, I’m going to share my heart.

The season of infertility in my life was a very hard and painful one. I would not have decided to go into ministry without it though. Before I was able to conceive my children, God used that season to take me on a journey of growth. This particular verse was one that He brought to me over and over again.

We could place our hope in modern medicine. We could place our hope in our own efforts and those of our spouse. We could place our hope in getting a positive pregnancy test. But putting our hope in those things can leave us empty, because ultimately they cannot satisfy. They are beautiful, wonderful gifts from the Lord, but misplaced Hope sets us up for disappointment and idolatry.

It is only when we get to a place where we are waiting for the Lord and putting our hope in His word that we can be truly satisfied. I actually read a fantastic book about just this thing during my season of wait, and I am more than happy to send a link if anyone wants it (no matter what you are waiting on answers for). And more often than not I have seen in my own life and in that of others, that ultimately God will restore. He has a plan, and his timing and ways are far better than our own.

So if you are struggling today, friend, I want to encourage you to evaluate where you are placing your hope. Wait for the Lord and hope in Him alone. Use the gifts that He has made available to you, absolutely! But do not let those be where your hope is found. He promises in Psalm 126:5 that “Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy!”

One of my favorite places to shop for gifts is The Daily Grace Co. They have the most beautiful Bibles, the sweetest Bible Studies, journals, mugs, jewelry and more! They are almost always having amazing sales, too. Invest in the spiritual health of the mama in your life with a sweet gift from The Daily Grace Co! You literally can’t go wrong.

Some Banging’ Kitchen Gear

Pampered Chef Nonstick Skillet

As a mom first, and Pampered Chef Consultant second, I can honestly tell you that this would make any mom’s day! I love to be in the kitchen, making delicious meals for my loved ones. But I absolutely hate the clean-up. Our Stainless Steel Non-stick Skillet is my pride and joy! That baby can go right into the dishwasher after use.

Our Stoneware is another favorite of mine! Food just tastes better cooked on a stone. If you know, you know! Plus, the new stones can also go in the dishwasher! I have a theme here… Anything to make cleanup easier on mom!

Last, but definitely not least, our RockCrock line is my jam! I use the Dutch Oven almost daily. It can go from stovetop, to oven to dishwasher, making one-pot meals a breeze!

You really can’t go wrong! Browse here and send me a message on the site if you need help!

A Ninja Foodi

Ninja Foodi

I’m not kidding you when I saw that I also use this, in some form or fashion, pretty much every day! You can slow cook, pressure cook, sauté, air fry and more. Every woman needs one of these in her Kitchen! Grab that bad boy HERE!

Help Her with Dinner

eMeals and Instacart

Absolutely cook a good meal or take her out to give her the night off! But that ain’t what I am talkin’ about here! eMeals, my friend. This will be the gift that keeps giving and takes one thing off of her plate. (You can read my full review HERE).

A Roomba

self-emptying iRobot Roomba

I’m so serious when I say that you will earn all of the brownie points with this one! If you have siblings, you could make it a group gift! I absolutely think that my Roomba was the best purchase I have ever made on Amazon. It helps my mind stay calm to see clean floors, especially with a baby crawling around, and it gives me the gift of time with my family and not constantly vacuuming.

A Getaway

Sometimes, the gift of quality time is the best gift you can give! A break from the pressures of daily life to just relax and unwind may be just what Mom needs! There are ways to save, no matter what destination you are thinking or what your budget is!

Palace Resorts have fantastic all-inclusive options, and they have rapid COVID testing included in their bookings right now so that you can travel safely! Wanting to stay a little closer to home, or get more of a “house” experience? VRBO has amazing options and we really have loved the times we have stayed with them!

A Delicious Cooke Bouquet

Chocolate!

Enough said. What woman doesn’t love chocolate? Create a custom Ghirardelli mix for mom, and save!

Wicked Good Cupcakes

Wicked Good Cupcakes Mother's Day Box

Good Coffee

Hawaii Coffee Company

If your mom is a coffee lover, you need to check out Hawaii Coffee Company! I fell in love with Kona coffee when I visited Maui a few years back. She will absolutely love it!

Copper Cow Coffee has delicious pour over coffees and teas as well!

I would also highly recommend a Ninja Coffee and Tea system if she doesn’t have one! You can make just about anything in them. We love ours, and convinced my dad that my mom needed one for Christmas. We were not wrong! They are the best!

Pamper Her Hair (and Save)

L'Ange Hair products

For the longest time as a mom, I felt guilty for spending money on hair products for myself. My poor hair needed quality care (that postpartum hair loss though…), but I was determined to buy that $2 bottle of Suave. L’ange has changed my hair care game, and any mom would be thrilled to open up some of their beautifully packaged products! Their styling tools are some of the best, too. They are having a big Mother’s Day sale and you can save using code “LOVEYOU”.

The Gift of Better Beauty

Beauty Counter Countertime Regimen

This is something that I personally would love! But as a mama that always puts the needs of my kids first when it comes to spending money, I struggle to splurge on things like this. I think any mama would be so excited to open up this CounterTime Regimen, and look at the gorgeous packaging! Let my sweet friend Lauren Hyde help you find a gift that works for your budget!

A Cricut

Rose Gold Cricut Maker

If she loves crafting, a Cricut is an amazing gift! They have bundle options and several different machines to choose from. The Cricut site even offers interest-free payment plans! Added bonus? This can be the gift that keeps giving! I used my Cricut to start an Etsy shop as a new stay-at-home-mom, and also use it often to make things for the kids.

A Unique, One-of-a-Kind Gift from Etsy

Etsy Mother's Day Gifts

Speaking of Etsy, they have a really awesome curated collection of Mother’s Day gift ideas that you can find here! Grab her something personalized or truly unique, and support the small businesses and makers on Etsy in the process.

Jewelry

A necklace, sparkly earrings or a pretty Pandora charm make a super special gift. Reed’s Jewelers has a great Mother’s Day collection to make it easy for you! Amazon has some really nice Diamond Earrings (well, and just about anything), if you want something Prime!

A Fitness Bike

Peleton Bike for less

Fellas, tread lightly here! Make sure she actually wants this, or you could wind up in hot water! But if she’s like me and has been eyeing the Peloton but refusing to spend the money, these JOROTO bikes are amazing! We purchased this exact bike a few days back after doing tons of research and reading thousands of reviews. I am here to tell you, it is legitimately amazing! This bike gives a smooth, silent ride and is so sturdy. Plus, at less than $400, it is a major money saver! We just downloaded the Peloton app on our iPad and pay $12/month to do their rides! Go check it out HERE!
